Veterans – Scars for Freedom

How veterans can be affected by scars:

In the past scars were a symbol of honor, but for some they bring back bad memories.

Veterans have always had scars. They can symbolize many things to many people. Most think that veterans like the look of their scars, but now having a choice to get them removed may change the way that they are thought of. The Scar Treatment Center in Palm Desert is offering free scar revision to any veteran of the armed forces. This is a way to give appreciation to the people that risk their lives for all of us, and an opportunity for veterans to decide if they want to keep the memories that go along with a scar.

“I felt pretty bad when I looked at my scar. I felt like my scar was growing everyday,” Arturo Escobedo says when he thought about the scar he used to have. “I feel a lot better now. Since coming to the scar Treatment Center, little by little my scar is becoming invisible.” Bad memories are just one of the negative things that scars may affect someone. Self esteem can be affected if the person is self conscience about how they look. “Times have changed since the “tough guy” mentality of the past,” says Guadalupe Ponte, owner of the Scar Treatment Center. “When people feel good about their appearance their self esteem is going to be better.”

The Scar Treatment Center wants to help give back a little something to let veterans know that they are appreciated, and not forgotten. They have been in business here in the Coachella valley since 1992 and have helped many people get rid of their negative thoughts buy getting rid of scars and burns. With the venture of this project the Scar Treatment Center hopes to start a trend for other locals businesses to contribute by donating services, supplies, or funds. Each business that helps will recieve a patriotic red, white, and blue ribbon as a symbol that there are people that care. Plus their business will be publicized in our Scars For Freedom scrap book for veterans.
